The studio smells like burning paper, but not quite.
It's cleaner than that. More specific. When the laser runs, it releases something that sits between singed wood and a freshly snuffed candle: light, papery, with a faint chemical edge you notice the first few times and stop noticing after the hundredth. My wife still mentions it when I walk into the house after I've been cutting for a few hours. I've lost the ability to smell it at all.
This is one of those things that doesn't make it into descriptions of generative art.
The machine is a 100-watt CO₂ laser. It lives on a dedicated workbench and takes up roughly the footprint of a small car, though it's considerably more dangerous. When it's running, you hear it before you see it: a low mechanical hum from the exhaust fan, then the sound of the laser head moving: a high, thin zip, almost like a sewing machine if a sewing machine moved at twenty inches per second and cut through material instead of stitching it.
The laser head traces the design in a single continuous pass. If you watch it, really watch it, you can follow the logic of the file: the order in which it cuts, which lines come first, how the geometry unfolds from the code. There's a red dot, barely visible in daylight, and a thin ribbon of smoke rising from the cut point, pulled immediately upward by the exhaust. The whole thing smells like what it is: a precise, focused application of heat to paper. Something being unmade in order to become something else.
It takes minutes per layer, depending on complexity. A finished piece might have twelve layers, or twenty. Each one gets its own paths. Each one gets its own run.
When the job finishes, the machine stops with a small beep and the fan winds down. I open the lid and let the last of the smoke clear before reaching in.
The pieces are warm. Not hot (the laser moves too fast for that), but you can feel that something happened here, that energy passed through the material very recently. The cut edges are clean in a way that's hard to describe if you haven't felt it: smooth, slightly compressed, barely darker than the surrounding surface. You can run your thumbnail along an edge and feel nothing but precision.
What falls away is also interesting. The interior of each cutout, the negative space the laser removed, drops free in small, clean pieces. They pile up on the honeycomb bed beneath the workpiece. Some of them are intricate enough to be beautiful on their own: tiny geometric fragments, perfect little negative prints of what will eventually be shadow and depth in the finished sculpture. I keep a jar of them. I'm not sure why.
Assembly is quieter.
PVA glue, the same archival adhesive used in bookbinding for centuries, goes on with a small bottle with a fine tip, depending on the layer. Too much and the board warps overnight. Too little and it fails in a week. The right amount is something I learned by feel over years, not something I can describe by volume. I apply it, set the next layer, press it flat, check the registration, and wait.
Twelve layers takes time. I don't listen to music during assembly. I'm not sure why. Habit, maybe, or something about the quality of attention the work asks for. The room gets quiet except for the occasional small adjustment, the soft sound of pressing layers flat, the faint pop of the glue setting.
When it's done, the piece goes under weight overnight. In the morning it's a single object.
I've been asked, more than once, whether generative art is "really" handmade. Whether something produced by code and cut by a machine can honestly be called craft.
I think about this question differently after an afternoon in the studio. There's nothing abstract happening in that room. The smell is real. The warmth of the pieces coming off the bed is real. The years of learning to feel when the glue is right: that's real, and it's not in the code.
The algorithm produces form. The laser cuts it precisely. But something else turns it into an object: the sequencing of layers, the calibration of pressure and adhesive, the accumulated knowledge of how mat-board behaves under weight. That part is entirely human.
The code doesn't know what it made. The laser doesn't know what it cut.
What you hold at the end of the day is something that came through both of those systems and still required a person paying close attention in a room that smells faintly of burned paper.
I find that clarifying. Most days, I find it enough.
